NDL's Monthly Party @ La Peña

Namorados Da Lua's monthly part at La Peña takes place Saturday January 30th!
With special guests:

Mangue Express (Chico Science Tribute Band)

Mangue Express honors the legacy of Chico Science, visionary brazilian composer from Pernambuco that in the early 90's fused together, the traditional sounds of Maracatu, Côco and Ciranda with contemporary elements of Funk, Rock and Hip Hop. His music was a wake up call for Brazilian Youth at the time when most brazilian radio waves were streaming foreign music. His music still reverberates showing how harmonious the mix of modern and primitive can be.

Maracatu Pacifico

Hailing from West Oakland, Maracatu Pacifico is a community-based performance group that brings Afro-Brazilian maracatu music and dance from Northeastern Brazil to the SF Bay Area.

Maracatu Pacifico was founded as Bateria Lucha and Maracatu Luta under former director Derek Wright in the early 2000s, playing at the huge anti-war marches in the run up to the Iraq war. The group was reborn as Maracatu Pacifico in 2012 under the leadership of current director Eric Hoffman, who has continued the group’s value for community and personal development through the study and performance of maracatu.

We will also be showing the movie
The Summer of Gods, a short film about a young girl named Lili who unites with her Afro-Brazilian religious ancestry on a summer visit with family to their ancestral village in rural Brazil. During her stay, she encounters Orishas (African gods) who help her find peace with a gift that has previously vexed her. The film is set in the Northeast of Brazil where Afro-Brazilian religious traditions remain strong. Lili's Grandma upholds Orisha traditions as an admired local priestess, but to ensure these traditions carry on after she passes, the gifted Lili is led on a mystical adventure of initiation through a nearby forest.

Produced by
Eliciana Nascimento, an award winner film director and producer. She holds an MFA (Master of Fine Arts) in Cinema from San Francisco State University. Her short film The Summer of Gods premiered at Cannes film Festival, and has won five awards so far, including three of best picture. With this film, she reveals the beauty, culture and mythology of her people.

Right after the movie we will be having a pannel on black lives matter.
